SANDRA VICK
Sandra lives near Penicuik and exhibits widely throughout Scotland and beyond. She aims through her paintings to encourage people to look at the wonder within their natural environments, specifically by focusing on birds and their habitat.
"My artistic practice is concerned with researching and observing birds, assembling a sense of them and their habits over the year, then building up an image that gives an essence of the bird without being a full representation. I work with acrylic paints and inks on canvas and paper, as well as using digital printing to produce small artists' books. I use silhouettes to simplify images so I can focus on shape and negative space. For some pieces I'm more concerned with the story behind the bird, for others the importance is an artistic investigation of composition and space".
Sandra has had a varied career, originally studying for a degree in Banking, Insurance and Finance at the University of Bangor before going on to a Postgraduate Diploma at the University of Tromsø in Norway. After various research and lecturing posts she turned to painting in 2000, obtaining a Foundation for Art and Design degree at Leith School of Art, a BA(Hons) in Painting from Edinburgh College of Art and subsequently a Masters in Fine Art (Painting) from the same College. She won several awards whilst at Edinburgh College of Art, including the Andrew Grant Bequest Prize three times, and has since undertaken several projects with local communities, including collaborative art projects with Midlothian Council and the Scottish Seabird Centre and an artist residency at the Beach Hut, Dunbar.
Sandra is a member of the Society of Scottish Artists and exhibits regularly with the Society of Wildlife Artists. Her work can be found at The Dancing Light Gallery, West Linton and ScotlandArt, Glasgow as well as at various art fairs and smaller galleries.
