DAVID HAY

David lives and paints in the Borders village of Yetholm and is a prolific and successful landscape painter. He graduated from Edinburgh College of Art in 1970 having studied under an array of illustrious artists including Elizabeth Blackadder, John Huston, Robin Philipson and William Gilles. David was a teacher of art and design from 1971 and the principal teacher at Kelso High School until his retirement in 2008.

'My paintings relate mostly to the local landscape but also travel and places remembered. Sources are environmental, natural or built and often beautiful but sometimes disturbing and threatening. Atmosphere and the effect of changing light on the mood of my subjects are of great interest to me.
I use a water based underpainting then work and rework the painting with glazes of colour until the image becomes established'.

David is a member of Visual Arts Scotland and regularly exhibits with galleries across Scotland and Northumberland. His work may be viewed at, among others, Flaubert Gallery and the Torrance Gallery, Edinburgh, the Ruthven Gallery, Auchterarder, the Bamburgh Gallery and the Flat Cat and Smokehouse Galleries in the Borders.
