- 20TH CENTURY WORKS OF ART
ROB HAIN
Since he began painting professionally in 1980 Rob Hain has been quietly building up a reputation as one of Scotland's most unusual and talented artists.
Born in Dorset and educated at Loughborough College of Art, Rob spends his time working from his studio in the Scottish Borders creating scenes that reflect his fascination with the rich variety of architecture to be found across Scotland. This love of his adopted country can be seen throughout his work, from a fishing village in Aberdeenshire to brightly-coloured houses lining the shore in Tobermory to an autumn day in The Highlands. The bustle and tightly-packed buildings of Edinburgh's Old Town hold a particular appeal and are perfectly suited to Rob's unique style of painting. Lowry-inspired figures on the move populate his townscapes, towering tenements jostle one another for position and generous layers of colour-rich paint complete the striking effect.
The key to Rob's skill lies in his distinctive compositions and ability to turn seemingly ordinary subjects into scenes of wonder. In his hands Edinburgh becomes a mass of twisting and turning streets resembling a surreal pop-up map while a view across the countryside turns fields into blocks of colour peopled by lollipop trees and red houses.
Rob has exhibited throughout the U.K. but it is in Scotland and in Edinburgh in particular that he feels most at home. His vibrantly coloured and quirky townscapes have won him many admirers and his work sits in private collections around Europe, Australia and the USA.
All prints are available framed and unframed.
