- 20TH CENTURY WORKS OF ART
CLAUDIA MASSIE
Claudia grew up in the Borders and is currently living in Perthshire. Her recent work is focused on aspects of the rural landscape and she was shortlisted for the 2009 Jolomo Scottish Landscape Painting Award.
"I aim to represent the landscape in a way that doesn't merely reflect but also enhances the significant aspects of a certain place. I focus on wilderness: barren moorlands, rough hill farms, dense forests and explore the emptiness, space, light and colour of these places.
I seek out elements of the landscape and weatherscape which offer certain structural possibilities, and am particularly drawn to scenes with a pronounced linear axis which I use as the compositional basis of my work.
My aim is to capture the form and the feel of the landscape and to produce a painting that is in itself an object of painterly beauty and interest. I have a great interest in both the natural world and its geology and this is integral to my observations and the resultant painting.
Claudia was educated at Edinburgh College of Art and since graduating in 2000 has taken part in numerous solo and group exhibitions throughout the country. Recent exhibitions include Highland/Lowland at the Flaubert Gallery, Edinburgh, Frames Gallery, Perth, Iona House Gallery, Oxford and the Jolomo Scottish Landscape Awards Finalists exhibition at the Strathearn Gallery, Crieff.
