FOUR BEES
Acrylic on Glass
25 x 25cm
This series of glass artworks are created by painting onto the underside of the glass of the frame. The paint is applied in very thin layers allowing light to pass through the front face of the glass. As light mixes with the paint, amazing shadows are cast onto the backboard of the frame and the insects appear to float in space.
The opacity of the paint is controlled in such a way that the insects appear to have real mass and this makes the viewer question whether the insects are actually real. The paintings often feature entomology subjects as well as clouds and weatherfronts. The series is as much about the process as about the subject matter. The objective of these works is to create impossible paintings where the line between the viewer and the artwork is not so much blurred as completely lost.
